Anything less than 95% achievement is underperforming and underperformers create a weak link in the hog chain. International leadership expert and author, John C. Maxwell describes the underperformers’ effect on the team in his The Law of the Chain. Maxwell says, “The strength of the team is impacted by its weakest link.” He lists six things that are obvious when a weak link continues to be part of the team:
1. The stronger members identify the weak one
2. The stronger members have to help the weak one
3. The stronger members come to resent the weak one
4. The stronger members become less effective
5, The stronger members question the leaders ability
6. The weak members always take more of the leader’s time than the strong ones
Being a hog and being an underperformer is oxy-moronic; the terms are incompatible. When a hog slips into being an “underperformer” they don’t lose their hog status, but they acknowledge the situation, study the facts (See Feb.16th blog, “The Sales Goals Tell What We Want To Happen”), develop a game plan and immediately begin to execute the plan.
